September 26, also known as The Last of Us Day, has arrived, and HBO is celebrating with the release of the first full trailer for season two of its hit TV adaptation, The Last of Us. The new trailer expands on the teaser we saw a few weeks ago, offering a more detailed look at what’s to come in the highly-anticipated second season. Notably, it provides fresh glimpses of Catherine O'Hara as a therapist-like character and Kaitlyn Dever in the pivotal role of Abby, a new and crucial addition to the story.
The trailer doesn't shy away from intense moments, including a heart-pounding sequence where Abby narrowly avoids being crushed by infected under a chain-link fence. Fans of the video game will also recognize several iconic moments from The Last of Us Part II, including a confrontation between Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) and an infected in an abandoned supermarket. There’s also a touching scene where Ellie plays guitar for Dina (Isabela Merced), echoing one of the game's most memorable moments.
Other familiar scenes from the game are teased, including the subway sequence, the eerie Seraphites, and Jeffrey Wright, who reprises his role as the leader of a militant faction. Pedro Pascal also returns as Joel, seen in emotional scenes, including one where he plays guitar alongside Ellie and sheds a tear during a therapy session with O'Hara’s character.
While the trailer delivers on the excitement, it doesn’t confirm an exact release date for season two, only noting that it will air in 2025. However, HBO's Casey Bloys recently hinted that the series will drop in the first half of the year to make it eligible for the next Emmy Awards.
In addition to the trailer release, Naughty Dog is celebrating TLoU Day with special in-game content and new merchandise. Fans can now pick up The Last of Us-themed avatars and emojis on Steam, along with a special Steam Deck startup video. On the PlayStation side, PS Plus Extra and Premium members can access the PS5 remake of the original The Last of Us at no additional cost, starting today.
