North Carolina Governor Race 2024: Josh Stein Holds Significant Lead Over Mark Robinson

In North Carolina's 2024 gubernatorial race, the two main candidates are Republican Mark Robinson and Democrat Josh Stein. According to recent polling, Stein holds a significant lead over Robinson, with some estimates showing Stein ahead by around 12-17 percentage points. For instance, a CNN/SSRS poll conducted in late September 2024 showed Stein with 53% of the vote compared to Robinson's 36%, indicating a challenging path for Robinson to overcome this deficit.

Robinson, currently the lieutenant governor of North Carolina, has garnered attention for his outspoken conservative views and support for pro-life policies, gun rights, and charter schools. He is the first African American to hold his current position. However, Robinson's campaign has been marred by controversies, including allegations related to past comments on a pornographic website, which he has denied. These issues have led some within the Republican Party to suggest he should withdraw from the race, though Robinson has stated his intent to continue.

Meanwhile, Stein, the state’s attorney general since 2017, has built his platform on consumer protection, environmental issues, and crime prevention. He has also been a strong advocate for voter rights and health care expansion, appealing to a broader coalition of voters. Stein’s political experience and steady leadership have helped him gain traction with voters, positioning him as the frontrunner in the race(

With the election looming in November 2024, it remains to be seen whether Robinson can close the gap, especially given the national focus on issues like abortion rights and gun control, which are central to both candidates’ platforms. Regulatory scrutiny and past political controversies may continue to shape the dynamics of this high-stakes race.
